What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

The use of acupuncture on the face has been used for centuries in China and other Asian countries to enhance beauty and preserve a youthful appearance. Only in the last decade has Cosmetic Acupuncture, or Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture, gained popularity in the United States. This modality is a non-surgical treatment that may help to improve skin tone and color, tighten facial muscles and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Based upon the same principles of Oriental Medicine that allow acupuncture to treat a variety of conditions, Cosmetic Acupuncture is a holistic approach in supporting a healthy complexion. For those who want to slow the signs of aging, but do not want to undergo surgery or inject toxins into their body, Cosmetic Acupuncture is an effective alternative.

How does it work?

Ultra fine, virtually painless, sterile needles (about one-tenth the size of a hypodermic needle) are inserted into and around wrinkles resulting in increased blood flow and collagen production, improving the elasticity of the skin. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, "qi", or energy disruptions are corrected providing a healthier glow to the skin, as well as an overall sense of well-being. Body acupuncture points may also be used during the treatment to support the complexion while addressing additional health complaints.

Is Cosmetic Acupuncture like a facelift?

The answer is an emphatic no, nor is it intended to replace a facelift. Cosmetic acupuncture is not a surgical procedure and will not produce sudden, drastic changes. Unlike Botox (a toxin which paralyzes facial muscles), acupuncture results appear much more natural and subtle. As with all Traditional Chinese Medicine care, Cosmetic Acupuncture involves a gradual, healthful process that is customized for each individual. Positive side effects may include increased energy, relaxation, improved sleep and improved digestion.

How many treatments will I need?

A typical treatment protocol consists of 10 appointments over a 5-week period. Each treatment lasts approximately 60 minutes. With maintenance visits every few months, results can last for several years depending upon one's age and condition of the skin.

Are there contraindications?

People who suffer from high blood pressure, bleeding disorders, seizures, acute allerigic reactions, are pregnant, taking blood thinning medications, or suffer from frequent migraine headaches should avoid Cosmetic Acupuncture.
